Cumberland is a long-driveway town. Larger residential lots, more elevation change, and ledge close to the surface in many of the inland subdivisions mean Cumberland driveway projects look different than tight Portland or Foreside builds. Envy Excavation builds and rebuilds driveways across Cumberland with the base depth and drainage approach the soils actually need.
A long Cumberland driveway carries water differently than a short one. Slope, length, and intermediate grade changes compound. Base prep that works on a 60-foot urban driveway can wash out on a 250-foot rural run. Envy specs base depth to Maine frost (12–18 inches compacted gravel), uses GPS-guided grading on long runs, and adds culverts and swales where the slope and water path require them.
Three Cumberland realities shape every driveway project. Ledge. Much of inland Cumberland sits on shallow bedrock; hitting ledge during sub-base excavation either forces a more expensive build-up over the rock or requires removal. We carry test pits when the slope or vegetation suggests ledge proximity. Slope. Cumberland's elevation change means many driveways have multiple grade transitions; designing for water management across the run matters more than on a flat suburban lot. Length. Drives over 200 feet need different drainage, more frequent culverts, and crowning that doesn't pond at the low point. We've worked Cumberland for years and know which subdivisions have which conditions.
